Working with Words

Here is some basic information about the actual Working With Words Assessment:

This is a timed assessment; you will have 8 minutes to complete the 48 questions in this assessment.
Don't be concerned about completing all the questions. You are not expected to be able to answer all of the questions within the allotted time, so just do as many as you can.

For best results on this assessment please keep the following in mind:

You do not have to answer the questions in the order they appear. Skip around and answer the items that are easiest for you; then spend your remaining time checking your answers or working on the questions you skipped.
You will find that some types of questions are easier for you to answer than others, so do those first. Avoid spending too much time working on any one question.

And finally, a couple of MUST OBSERVE instructions to avoid having your assessment terminated:

You must use your mouse to answer the questions in this assessment. Do not use your keyboard.
Do not use the "back" or "refresh" features of your browser.

The 48 questions in this assessment are divided into 3 types:

Hidden words
Letter sequences
Anagrams

Following are examples and samples of each of the 3 types of questions. Review the example and then work out the answers to each of the sample questions. The correct answers for the sample questions are set out after each sample question.

A. HIDDEN WORDS

Search the string of letters to find 5 consecutive letters that form a hidden 5-letter word.

Example 1

ERASE

SOLVE

Solution: The answer is TREAD.

Now do the following samples. Remember to use your mouse to select the letters that make up the hidden 5-letter word. Use the ERASE button or click the selected letters to remove letters. Do not use the Backspace key.

Sample 1

ERASE

SOLVE

Solution: The answer is COUGH.

Sample 2

ERASE

SOLVE

Solution: The answer is PLACE.

B. LETTER SEQUENCES

Find the letter sequence that is different from the others.

Example 1

a) BCD

b) JKL

c) RQP

d) XYZ

Solution: The answer is (c) RQP; because the others are in alphabetical order.

Example 2

a) CBA

b) PON

c) IHG

d) UVW

Solution: The answer is (d) UVW because the others are in reverse alphabetical order.

Now do the following samples. Remember to use your mouse to select your answer.

b) ZYX

Solution: The answer is (a) DEF because all the others are in reverse alphabetical order.

Sample 2

a) HIJ

b) OPQ

c) EFG

d) NML

Solution: The answer is (d) NML; because the others are in alphabetical order.

C. ANAGRAMS

Form a word by rearranging all the letters.

Example 1

Solution: The answer is SCOUT.
